A Robotic Technology That Can Discover Lung Cancer Early

There’s a new robotic technology that can discover lung cancer early in the body. According to a Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) Philadelphia report published on Tuesday, it doesn’t just detect the lung; it also has the ability to treat it at the same time. This latest technology is a huge breakthrough because, according to American Lung Association’s (ALA) annual report, lung cancer survival rates has gone up, thanks partially to this new technology.

Robotic Technology That Can Discover Lung Cancer Early
The latest tech in fighting lung cancer

The new statistics, the five-year survival rate is now estimated to be at 25%. There has been a successful trial with Kathleen McGinn. Kathleen found her cancer early and treated it with this new robotic procedure. “I’m very optimistic for my future,” Kathleen explained to CBS when interviewed about this robotic technology that can discover lung cancer early and how it had helped her.

Robotic Technology That Can Discover Lung Cancer Early

This latest technology is called robotic bronchoscopy. The amazing perk about it is how it allows doctors to reach the small, remote parts of the human lung they can’t get to with regular tools.  Even doctors are excited by its usefulness, one of such doctors is Dr. Partrick Ross with Main Line Health. He called it “revolutionary” because, in addition to spotting early-stage cancer, it also allows doctors like himself to treat it at the same time. And all of these is achieved while the patient remains under anesthesia. “When they wake up, we say you have lung cancer, and it’s treated. And that is all the difference,” Dr. Ross concluded with a smile.

Robotic Technology That Can Discover Lung Cancer Early

The Need to Screen High-risk Patients

At the time, this new robotic technology that can discover Lung cancer early is mainly used on those who need a biopsy for a lung mass, but medical doctors say anyone at high-risk needs to get screened.

The ALA has been worried when the association found that former smokers who have access to the treatment are not getting the recommended screenings. Among these, an increasing number of young women and nonsmokers are being diagnosed with lung cancer. Both groups needed to practice more diligence in being examined. An example of this is Leah Phillip, a mom of three and a runner who never smoked a day in her life, but was surprisingly diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer at age 43.
“When they came back after the bone biopsy and said you have lung cancer, you could have knocked us over with a feather. My mom and my husband and I were all in the room,” Mrs Phillip reported to CBS News.

Robotic Technology That Can Discover Lung Cancer Early

It wasn’t a surprising news, when the new State of Lung Cancer report confirmed that nearly 237,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed this year. This does not mean that all hope is lost for patients suffering from the disease.

“We’re up to 25% survival at five years, which is significantly up from the 17% survival in 2015. We attribute most of this to early detection, better treatments and systemic therapies for patients who have lung cancer that spread to other parts of the body,” reported Dr. Bobby Mahajan who was with the ALA.

Patients Who Don’t or Never Smoked

The statistics shows that currently up to 20% of people with lung cancer doesn’t smoke or have never smoked in their lives but have contracted the disease from other risk factors including second-hand smoke, air pollution and radon gas (the second leading cause of cancer).
According to Phillips, “Anyone with lungs can get lung cancer.” She added that her type of lung cancer has been linked to radon exposure which can happen anywhere even homes’ basements. “If there any thing this has taught us, it has taught a lesson that we live every day to the fullest. We make it a priority to spend time together as a family,” she concluded.

    Conclusion

Medical doctors have yet to determine the reasons why a growing number of young women are being exposed to lung cancer. But this new robotic technology that can discover lung cancer early and also treat it would eventually even the odds and help fight the good fight against lung cancer. We think this is a big game-changer and are hopeful of the discovery. Let us know what you think about this robotic technology that can discover lung cancer early in the comment section below.

  • Fastest And flexible Robots – Inspired by Cheetahs

Fastest And flexible Robots - Inspired by Cheetahs
The biomechanics that inspired the design

Researchers have designed and developed a new type of soft robot with the capacity to move more quickly on solid surfaces or even in the water than previous generations of soft robots. These soft robots were inspired by the biomechanics of cheetahs. They belong to a group classified as Leveraging Elastic Instabilities for Amplified Performance (LEAP) robots. The new soft silicone robotics are also capable of grabbing objects delicately or with sufficient strength to lift heavy objects. These are the fastest and flexible robots.

Jie Yin, an assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at North Carolina State University and co-author of the publication paper on the new soft robot designs had this to add…”Cheetahs are the fastest creatures on land, and they derive their speed and power from the flexing of their spines.”

Fastest And flexible Robots - Inspired by Cheetahs

“My team and I were inspired by the cheetah to create a type of soft robot that has a spring-powered, ‘bistable’ spine. This is to say, the robot has two stable states,” Yin continued. “We can switch between these stable states rapidly by simply pumping air into channels that line the soft, silicone robot. However, switching between the two states releases a significant amount of energy, which allows the robot to quickly exert force against the ground. Galloping across the ground surface, its feet actually leaving the ground…”

    Fastest And flexible Robots

“…the previous soft robots were crawlers, that remained in contact with the ground at all times. This limits their speed.”

The previous record has held that the fastest and flexible soft robots before now moved at speeds of up to 0.8 body lengths per second on flat, solid surfaces. However, this ew class of soft robots, “Leveraging Elastic instabilities for Amplified Performance” (LEAP), are able to acquire speeds of up to 2.7 body lengths per second. That is more than three times faster, with a frequency of about 3Hz. These new soft robots also have the added advantage of running up steep inclines, something that was very challenging or impossible for other previous soft robots that exert less force against the ground.

    Conclusion

When asked, Jie Yin said, “We also demonstrated the use of several soft robots working together, like pincers, to grab objects. By tuning the force exerted by the robots, we were able to lift objects as delicate as an egg, as well as objects weighing 10 kilograms or more.”

These “galloping” LEAP robots are approximately 7 centimeters long and weigh about 45 grams. The researchers also demonstrated that the LEAP design could improve swimming speeds for soft robots. Attaching a fin, rather than feet, a LEAP robot was able to swim at a speed of 0.78 body lengths per second, as compared to 0.7 body lengths per second for the previous fastest swimming soft robot. Making them the fastest and flexible robots to be designed.

  • This Underwater Movement Sensor Can Detect When a Swimmer Might Be Drowning

    Underwater movement sensor
Testing the underwater sensor with a dummy

Over the year, many flexible fitness trackers could not be submerged in water because the coatings required to completely seal these devices would make them uncomfortable to wear. Thanks to new technologies, researchers have successfully applied a thin, slippery coating to a conductive fabric, creating a breathable underwater movement sensor. They integrated this sensor into a smart device that sends a wireless notification to a smartphone app when a swimmer stops moving, indicating that they may be drowning. According to the American Chemical Society (ACS) Nano publication, this is the first underwater movement sensor that could save a swimmer from drowning.

The latest tech shows a lot of promising features; such as monitoring heart rate and tracking swimmers’ activity and safety. Also, the current methods to protect these electronics make the devices thick and impermeable to air, and this could lead to skin irritation.

    underwater movement sensor

The previous research carried out, showed that though thin even layers of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) repelled enough water, thereby forming a protection layer that is flexible to movement sensors underwater. However, it was still quite unclear whether the coating would be comfortable. So, a team emerged to conduct this experiment. Among them were Jianying Huang, Cheolmin Park, Yuekun Lai and colleagues who wanted to test PDMS as a water-repellent coating for a fabric-based sensor that would be part of a wireless underwater movement detection system.

During this experiment, the researchers dipped a piece of polyester knit fabric into a graphene oxide solution and then into hydroiodic acid. The last dip was into a solution containing PDMS microparticles and nanoparticles.

    underwater movement sensor

Initial tests revealed that the coated fabric was conductive and water-repellent while remaining permeable to air. This suggested that the material would feel comfortable to wear. On attaching a sample of this coated fabric to a person’s finger and then bent while underwater, an electrical response was produced; making the design unique and one of a kind. The research team then integrated a power supply unit to the fabric-based sensor alongside a data collector to create a smart underwater movement sensor system; this could wirelessly transmit the electrical response produced to a smart phone. A test was run when the smart underwater movement sensor device was attached to a motorized swimming doll, and the app was successful in tracking the doll’s kicking legs.

In order to simulate drowning or a swimmer in distress, the doll’s kicking motion was turned off. And then the app detected this change also and sent a red warning message. According to the researchers, this is because the smart underwater movement sensor repels water; it could help monitor swimmers’ safety and be used in other types of underwater sensors.

    Conclusion

This latest technology could be the safety measure we have been waiting for to help rescue non-professional swimmer. Let us know your thoughts about what you think. This could be the big next thing.

  • Don’t Fall for These Financial Scams

Don’t Fall for These Financial Scams

Beware of the stranger on the phone, it could be a financial scammer. Nowadays, fraudsters are increasingly picking up the phone and using old-school tricks to steal your money. They could either be pretending to be a government worker, a family member in trouble. Investigations showed that impostor scams had overtaken identity theft last year for the first time, making financial scams the second-most reported fraud behind debt-collection scams. According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, it always begins with the phrase “fake debt collectors say a loan payment is due.”

    Financial scams
financial scams are aimed at stealing tender bills

In total, nearly 1.3 million fraud-related complaints were reported last year, a 2% increase over 2015. Most complainants said they had been scammed after a phone call. Investigations have shown that this is because fraudsters need to build some kind of relationship with the victim or victims in order to convince them to hand over money.

    financial scams

Katherine Hutt, a spokeswoman at the Better Business Bureau said victims paid out a total of $744 million to fraudsters last year, with the average one losing more than $1,100, according to the FTC. The best way to protect yourself is to get familiar with the tricks these thieves use. Fraudsters and scammers keep recycling well-known scenarios, but change small details.

Ways to Spot Scamming- Method of Scamming

Method #1: A Loved One Is In Trouble Scam

HOW THIS SCAM WORKS: The victims usually get a call from an impostor who is pretending to be a family member in trouble and who needs cash immediately. These Impostors can be convincing. According to the Michigan attorney general, they may go with the very convincing storyline that caused grandparents in Michigan to wire-transfer more than $30,000 to thieves posing as a grandson in need of money to be bailed out of a Canadian jail…

    financial scams
old people are usually prone to financial scam

The Solution: Always be suspicious of any calls from supposedly distressed relatives who is hesitant to give you their names. When they hang up or end the phone call with you, try calling the said family member or any other family members you think might know where they are with the phone numbers you have to see if they actually need help.

Method #2: Your Computer Is Broken Scam

HOW THIS SCAM WORKS: Financial scammers use this method as well; they call claiming to be from tech support and that your computer is broken or infected with a virus. They pretend to be from a big company such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. Some may even ask you to open some files on your personal computer, and once you do this. It will help them gain control of your computer. Perhaps they will ask for your credit card information to charge you for some phony services or software. Besides a phone call, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said some fraudsters will even use a pop-up message on your computer that says a virus has been detected with a phone number to call.

    Financial scams

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF: You can start by ignoring any calls or pop-ups saying you have a virus on your PC or phone. These big companies don’t usually have a way of know when your PC has a a technical issues and won’t contact you. However, if you do run into a problem and fall for this type of financial scam, We recommend that you scan your personal computer with recommended security software and change all your passwords.

METHOD #3: You Owe The Government Scam

HOW THIS SCAM WORKS: This is anther method fraudsters use, they pretend to be from the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) or another government agency. They would claim you owe money and would pressure you to wire money or send them a prepaid debit card that you loaded up with cash. Most of them may threaten to have you arrested or sued if you don’t pay the debt. The FTC have reportedly said scammers often change the agency they pretend to be calling from in other to carry out financial scams, such as the immigration office. Sometimes they won’t ask for money, and will just try to get your social security number or other personal information over the phone.

    Government financial scams

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF: You should know that no government agency will ask you to wire money or send a prepaid debit card to pay back a debt, so hang up if you’re asked to do such a thing. However, if you are doubtful if the caller is a scammer, the FTC recommends looking up the government agency’s number online and calling the agency yourself to see if there is an issue.

    Conclusion

Now you know various way fraudsters and financial scammers operates, you know better how to protect yourself from such financial scams. The goal here is not to be scammed ever. If you had similar experience or know someone who is a vctim, leave us a comment below. Stay safe and thank you.

Users Have Sense of ‘fakeness,’ With AI Powered Makeup Mirror

    A.I. Powered makeup mirror

Recent study shows that people get a sense of falsehood when they have a glance at the AI powered makeup mirror. Authors found out that although people felt comfortable with makeup on when looking at themselves via an ordinary mirror, the opposite is the case when staring at oneself through a digital makeup mirror.

    Self-inauthenticity | source: igofor10.com

Consumers discovered that A.I. make up mirrors which are promoted by brands such as Charlotte Tilbury, L’Oreal and Amazon improved the imagination they had of themselves, as some imagined themselves appearing like celebrities they loved or how they could have appeared in the past. Nonetheless, when compared with live shopping experience for makeup, A.I. mirrors have succeeded in building a strong sense of self-counterfeit, and this is owing to the following factors:

    • Going for makeup at stores gives a sense of happiness, on the other hand, looking at oneself through an A.I. makeup mirror gives a sense of “horror”
    • Users get a feeling of embarrassment whenever they use A.I. makeup mirrors, and are less likely to share their digital content in their bid to gain societal acceptance
    • Makeup for customers is an emotional experience; life makeup shopping is seen as a process of personal reflection, which is hard to duplicate using an A.I. Powered mirror.
    • People see themselves via a lens by which, they think or perceive they should appear, based on collective observation of close contacts online, influencers or celebrities. An A.I. Powered mirror impedes the process whereby individuals obtain this proxy-self.
    Makeup kit | source:

    Conclusion

The sense of personal-inauthenticity consumers feel initially deflates their desire to make use of the A.I. makeup mirrors. Nevertheless, consumers prefer to go into a makeup shop to obtain full and enjoyable service. Meanwhile, these devices and their software permit users to send photos of their new look to the social media, but customers fear being embarrassed by their online network. Now, instead of making use of the A.I. powered makeup mirror to put-on makeup, consumers locate an influencer into cosmetics and makeup who bears similar looks including but not limited to face shape or skin color and follow their guide and recommendations.

This is a reread for me. I knew it within the first paragraph. I enjoyed it the second time just as much as the first. Shiloh Walker writes hard topics. Her characters are strong and engaging. The love interests are usually sidetracked by past pain. Jay and Linc are drawn together by their internet conversations. When Jay decides to find out why he cut her off, she steps into a situation that sets off her psychic abilities and those of her boss. The outcome is painful, but hopeful. I always enjoy this author.-Jancat

This series is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. Fair warning, the subject matter is dark and for some may cause triggers. The writing is good and the character development is excellent. It is part of a series but you don’t have to read them in order to enjoy this story. You don’t have to but I bet you’ll want to.-Kindle Customer

Interactive Mouthguard That Controls Electronic Devices

This latest discovery is so dope that it is focused on assisting individuals who have limited hand function or even leg functions. They can now use this device to control almost all electronic devices, ranging from computers, smartphones, and wheelchairs, by wearing a smart mouthguard that translates complex bite patterns accurately and quickly into instructions to control electronic gadgets. This invention was made by a research team from the Department of Chemistry at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Science, together with collaborators from Tsinghua University; all whom was led by Professor Liu Xiaogang. Whose supervision made possible the interactive mouthguard that controls electronic devices.

Over the years, there have been various assistive technologies such as voice recognition, eye tracking and brain-computer interfaces have been developed in recent years to help physically disabled people, especially those with limited dexterity or neurological disorders to control electronic devices. But these technologies also have their limitations associated with them; the limitations can be environmental interference, the accuracy of its control, design cost and maintenance.

Interactive Mouthguard That Controls Electronic Devices

What is promising about Professor Liu and his team assistive technology design is how they demonstrated a smart mouthguard containing integrated pressure sensors to detect occlusal patterns. These patterns are then translated into data inputs, which have 98% accuracy when controlling electronic devices like computers, smartphones, wheelchairs, etc. This success and breakthrough were published in the Nature Electronics journal on 10th October 2022.

Interactive Mouthguard That Controls Electronic Devices
    Prof Liu and his team

    Drawbacks of Current Assistive Technologies

The great idea behind assistive technologies is their ability to promote independence and autonomy for people with disabilities. However, such technologies also have significant drawbacks. A good example would be voice recognition, this, usually requires a large operating memory and a noise-free environment to run. Whereas, eye tracking assistive technology requires a camera to be mounted in front of the user’s device and this is always is exhausting. Over the years, there have been improvements in brain-computer interfaces, which are invasive and require cumbersome wired instruments.

    Conclusion

As shown, bite force, has often been used as a parameter to assess chewing function, and as such, it is a promising area that hasn’t been fully developed yet. Prof. Liu and his team have used the high-precision control and minimal skill required by dental occlusion to develop a new concept for assistive technology by utilizing unique patterns of occlusal contacts.

What do you think about this interactive mouthguard that controls electronic devices? Do you think it can offer much help as it promises or would this be another tool that would hit a dead-end soon? let us know in the comment section.

While professional swimmers’ vocabulary may be over 200 hand signals, which include signals for communicating oxygen levels, nearness of aquatic species, to the performance of group tasks, recreational swimmers employ just around 20 signals. A group of researchers from Allen University have been able to come up with an underwater messaging app to enable successful communication under water.

The ability of divers to successfully communicate these hand signals underwater is limited by distance and in areas of low visibility. A potential solution to this issue is the two-way underwater messaging app or system. However, this solution requires expensive and scarce customized hardware.

At the University of Washington, Researchers display a way to achieve messaging underwater on billions of current smartphone brands and smartwatches via an underwater messaging app i.e. a software. The software the researchers developed is named AquaApp, which is the first mobile application for acoustic-type of networking and communication under water. The app was said to be usable on smartwatches and smartphones.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi communication technologies which smartphones use for communication rely on Radio signals which don’t work well under water. However acoustic signals do well under water. “With AquaApp, we demonstrate underwater messaging using the speaker and microphone widely available on smartphones and watches. Other than downloading an app to their phone, the only thing people will need is a waterproof phone case rated for the depth of their dive,” said co-lead author Tuochao Chen, a UW doctoral student in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering.

The application user-interface allows users to select messages from 240 pre-set messages that are consistent with the hand signals used by professional divers, while 20 of the most used signals are displayed for easy access on the user-interface. There are options to filter messages for up to eight categories, which includes environmental factors, directional indicators and equipment status.

During the building of the app, the team were faced with a number of technical challenges which they have not experienced in the past on land.

“The underwater scenario surfaces new problems compared to applications over the air,” said the co-author Justin Chan, who is a doctoral student in the Allen School. “For example, fluctuations in signal strength are aggravated due to reflections from the surface, floor and coastline. Motion caused by nearby humans, waves and objects can interfere with data transmission. Further, microphones and speakers have different characteristics across smartphone models. We had to adapt in real time to these and other factors to ensure AquaApp would work under real-world conditions.”

Some other challenges they were faced with and had to address included the tendency for devices to rapidly move and change proximity in the ocean current and several noise profiles due to the presence of animals, vessels and low-flying airplanes, that the app may encounter.

The team designed an algorithm that makes the app capable of live optimization on the acoustic frequencies and bitrate of every transmission in reference to specific parameters, such as noise, distance, and changes in frequency response between devices.

The way the app works is: To send a message from a device to another, the senders app sends a quick note, referred to as a preamble, first, to the receivers device. Aquapp on the receivers device processes the algorithm in order to identify the best conditions upon which to receive the preamble. Then the receivers app informs the senders app to send the actual message using the earlier identified conditions.

The researchers designed a networking protocol in order to enable sharing access to the water-based network.

The team of researchers designed a network protocol that allows access sharing to the water-based network. Relative to how Wi-Fi network signals referee traffic over the internet to support inter-app messaging, AquaApp is capable of accommodating about 60 different users at once per a local network.

    Live test

The team carried out live test of the AquaApp system in six different locations with varying water conditions and water activity levels, including beneath a bridge in a calm water body, a famous waterfront park in a water body with strong currents, next to the dock for fishermen at a busy lake and inside a bay that has strong waves. The team of researchers assessed the app’s performance at a distance of about 113 meters and depth of up to 12 meters.

“Based on our experiments, up to 30 meters is the ideal range for sending and receiving messages underwater, and 100 meters for transmitting SoS beacons. These capabilities should be sufficient for most recreational and professional scenarios,” said Chen.

The team of researchers also assessed AquaApp’s impact on the battery capacity by operating the app continuously on two Samsung Galaxy S9 mobile phones at highest volume, while the screens were activated. The app consumed 32% of the battery power over a period of four hours, and that’s within the recommended maximum dive time for scuba diving as a recreational activity.

    Conclusion

“AquaApp brings underwater communication to the masses, the state of underwater networking today is similar to ARPANET, the precursor of the internet, in the 1970s, where only a select few had access to the internet. AquaApp has the potential to change that status quo by democratizing underwater technology and making it as easy as downloading software on your smartphone.” said senior author Shyam Gollakota, a professor in the Allen School.
