    Summary

For readers of Tommy Orange, Yaa Gyasi, and Jhumpa Lahiri, an electrifying debut novel about three unforgettable characters who seek to rise—to the middle class, to political power, to fame in the movies—and find their lives entangled in the wake of a catastrophe in contemporary India.

Jivan is a Muslim girl from the slums, determined to move up in life, who is accused of executing a terrorist attack on a train because of a careless comment on Facebook. PT Sir is an opportunistic gym teacher who hitches his aspirations to a right-wing political party, and finds that his own ascent becomes linked to Jivan’s fall. Lovely–an irresistible outcast whose exuberant voice and dreams of glory fill the novel with warmth and hope and humor–has the alibi that can set Jivan free, but it will cost her everything she holds dear.

Majumdar writes with dazzling assurance at a breakneck pace on complex themes that read here as the components of a thriller: class, fate, corruption, justice, and what it feels like to face profound obstacles and yet nurture big dreams in a country spinning toward extremism. An extraordinary debut.

  • Yaa Asantewaa The Warrior Queen – African History

Yaa Asantewaa The Warrior Queen – African History

    Yaa Asantewaa, The warrior queen

In the Ashanti Empire, which is now a part of modern-day Ghana, Yaa Asantewaa I, the Queen Mother of Ejisu, was born on October 17, 1840. Her brother Nana Akwasi Afrane Okese, the Edwesuhene, or monarch, of Edwesu, appointed her. She was the leader of the Ashanti War, sometimes referred to as the War of the Golden Stool or the Yaa Asantewaa War of Independence, which was fought in 1900 against the British Empire. The daughter of Kwaku Ampoma and Ata Po, Yaa Asantewaa was born in Besease in 1840. Afrane Panin, her brother, rose to prominence as the local village of Edweso’s chief. She had a trouble-free upbringing and afterwards farmed the area around Boankra. She got married to a man from Kumasi in a polygamous union, and they had a daughter together. Her exile ended with her death in the Seychelles in 1921. She was a good farmer and a mother. She was an intellectual, a politician, an advocate for human rights, a monarch, and a commander in chief. Yaa Asantewaa rose to fame for leading the Ashanti Kings during the War of the Golden Stool, which was fought to preserve the Golden Stool’s sovereign independence from British colonial power.

    The warrior queen

Yaa Asantewaa witnessed a sequence of events that jeopardized the existence of the Ashanti Confederacy during her brother’s rule, including a civil war that lasted from 1883 to 1888. Yaa Asantewaa exercised her power as the Queen Mother to propose her own grandson as Ejisuhene following the death of her brother in 1894. Yaa Asantewaa assumed the role of district regent when the Asante administration, including the King of Asante Prempeh I and other officials, were banished to the Seychelles by the British in 1896. Frederick Hodgson, the British governor-general of the Gold Coast, wanted the Golden Stool, the Asante nation’s emblem, following Prempeh I’s banishment. The surviving Asante government members met in secret at Kumasi in response to this request to discuss.

Yaa Asantewaa of ancient Ghana Kingdow
Yaa Asantewaa of ancient Ghana Kingdow

Nana Yaa Asantewaa was aware of the consequences of British colonialism. Today, Ghanaians view her as a queen mother who used her influence in politics and society to support the defence of her realm. She appears to have used her matriarchal position to influence the Ashanti men to fight the British. The request made by Nana Yaa Asantewaa to the Asante Empire’s female citizens is based on the political responsibilities of Akan women and their different positions in the legislative and judicial systems. The Akan people have female analogues to the male stools in the hierarchy. The village council, or ôdekuro, was made up of elders who served as the matrilineage chiefs (mpanyimfo). The women, sometimes referred to as “mpanyinfo,”.

    Conclusion

Here are some of the things that made Yaa Asantewaa a remarkable woman:

    • She was a strong and determined leader. She was not afraid to stand up to the British, even though they were a much more powerful force.
    • She was a symbol of hope for her people. She gave them the courage to fight for their freedom, even when it seemed like the odds were stacked against them.
    • She was a role model for women. She showed that women can be just as strong and capable as men, and that they can play a leading role in society.

  • The Stormlight Archive: Words of Radiance

The Stormlight Archive: Words of Radiance

Words of Radiance is the second book in the epic fantasy series The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. It follows the lives of several characters who are involved in a war against the mysterious and powerful Voidbringers, who threaten to destroy the world of Roshar. The book is divided into five parts, each with a number of chapters and interludes that focus on different perspectives and events. Here is a brief summary of each part:

    Part One

    words of radiance

Alight. This part introduces the main characters and their situations. Kaladin, a former slave who became the leader of a bridge crew, is now the personal guard of King Elhokar and his uncle Dalinar, who are trying to unite the Alethi highprinces against the Parshendi, the race that assassinated the previous king. Shallan, a young scholar and artist, is traveling with her mentor Jasnah to the Shattered Plains, where the war is taking place, to find a way to stop the Voidbringers. However, their ship is attacked by a group of assassins and Jasnah is presumed dead. Shallan decides to continue her journey alone, using her abilities as a Lightweaver to disguise herself and create illusions. Szeth, the Assassin in White who killed the previous king, is sent by his new master, King Taravangian of Kharbranth, to kill Dalinar.

    Part Two

The stormlight archive: words of radiance

Winds’ Approach. This part shows the characters’ struggles and challenges as they approach their goals. Kaladin trains his bridge crew to become soldiers and tries to protect Dalinar from Szeth’s attacks, while also dealing with his distrust of the lighteyed nobility and his growing powers as a Windrunner. Shallan reaches the warcamps and meets Adolin, Dalinar’s son and her betrothed, as well as his brother Renarin, who has a mysterious spren named Glys. She also infiltrates a secret organization called the Ghostbloods, who are looking for information about Jasnah and the Voidbringers. Szeth fails to kill Dalinar and is captured by Kaladin, but escapes with the help of a Herald named Nale, who gives him a new mission: to kill all Radiants.

    Part Three

Deadly. This part reveals more secrets and mysteries about the world and the characters. Kaladin learns more about his spren Syl and his bond with her, as well as his connection to the ancient order of Knights Radiant. He also confronts his past enemy, Brightlord Amaram, who betrayed him and stole his Shardblade. Shallan discovers more about her own past and her family’s involvement with the Ghostbloods. She also learns more about her spren Pattern and her abilities as a Lightweaver. She uses them to create a fake soulcaster, a device that can transform matter, and to enter the hidden city of Urithiru, where Jasnah was heading. Szeth continues his killing spree and encounters Lift, another Radiant who can manipulate food into Stormlight.

    Part Four

The Approach. This part builds up the tension and conflict as the characters prepare for a final confrontation. Kaladin joins Dalinar’s army in a decisive battle against the Parshendi, who have adopted a new and dangerous form called stormform, which allows them to summon powerful storms called Everstorms. Shallan leads an expedition to find Urithiru, which turns out to be an ancient tower that was once the home of the Knights Radiant. She also reunites with Jasnah, who survived the attack on their ship and made her way to Urithiru using her abilities as an Elsecaller. Szeth arrives at the Shattered Plains and tries to kill Dalinar again, but is stopped by Kaladin.

    Part Five

Winds Alight. This part concludes the book with a series of climactic events and revelations. Kaladin fights Szeth in an epic duel in the sky and defeats him by breaking his Honorblade, a weapon that grants him his powers. He then spares his life and gives him his own Shardblade, which turns out to be an Honorblade as well. Dalinar faces Eshonai, the leader of the Parshendi, who has been corrupted by stormform and wants to unleash the Everstorm on Roshar. He manages to stop her by bonding with the Stormfather, a powerful spren that controls the highstorms, and becoming a Bondsmith, another order of Knights Radiant. He also declares himself as the new king of Alethkar and invites all other nations to join him in fighting against the Voidbringers. Shallan reveals her true identity to Adolin and confesses that she killed her father with her Shardblade, which is actually Pattern in disguise. She also discovers that Renarin is also a Radiant of an unknown order. Jasnah reveals that she knows about Shallan’s involvement with the Ghostbloods and warns her about their leader, who is none other than her estranged brother, Hoid. The book ends with the arrival of the Everstorm, which heralds the return of the Voidbringers and the beginning of a new Desolation.

    Conclusion

The ambiguity of the ending is part of what makes The Giver such a powerful and thought-provoking story. It leaves the reader to decide for themselves what happens to Jonas and Gabriel, and to ponder the implications of their journey. The ending also suggests that the future is uncertain, and that there is always hope for change.
