I loved reading Moon Called, the first book in the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. It is an urban fantasy novel that features a shapeshifter heroine who lives in a world full of werewolves, vampires, fae, and other supernatural beings. The book has an engaging plot, well-developed characters, and original mythology. It reminded me of the classic War of the Oaks by Emma Bull, and I think it is a must-read for fans of the genre.

The main character, Mercedes Thompson, is a talented mechanic who can turn into a coyote at will. She grew up with werewolves, but she is not one of them, and she has a complicated relationship with the local pack leader, Adam Hauptman. When a young werewolf shows up at her garage looking for help, she gets involved in a dangerous situation that forces her to seek assistance from her former pack and other allies. I admired Mercy’s strength, intelligence, and independence, as well as her sense of humor and loyalty.

The author, Patricia Briggs, did a great job of creating a rich and believable world, where different supernatural factions have their own histories, cultures, and politics. She did not rely on clichés or stereotypes, but instead created original and complex characters that are not easily categorized as good or evil. She also wrote in a skillful style, that balanced action, romance, and mystery.

I gave the book a high rating and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Moon Called is one of the best urban fantasy novels I have ever read, and it stands out among the many books in the field. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story with a twist. You will not be disappointed.
