Summary

Clayton Riddell, a struggling artist from Maine, is in Boston to sell his comic book project. He is standing in Boston Common when a mysterious signal is broadcast over the cell phone network, turning everyone who is using their phone at the time into a mindless, violent killer. Clayton is one of the few people who is not affected by the signal, and he is forced to flee Boston as the city descends into chaos.

Clayton eventually finds a group of survivors, including Tom McCourt, a middle-aged man, and Alice Maxwell, a fifteen-year-old girl. The group sets out to find a safe place to rebuild society. They also have to deal with the psychological effects of the signal, which has left many people traumatized and paranoid.

About the Author

Stephen Edwin King was born the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. After his father left them when Stephen was two, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father’s family was at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut.
