Are you looking for a new YA paranormal fantasy series to sink your teeth into? If so, you might want to check out Firespell, the first book in the Dark Elite series by Chloe Neill, the author of the popular Chicagoland Vampires novels.
Firespell introduces us to Lily Parker, a smart and sarcastic teenager who is sent to a prestigious boarding school in Chicago by her parents, who are off to do some mysterious research in Germany. Lily soon finds out that St. Sophia’s is not your typical school, as it is full of rich and snobby kids who love to bully the new girl. But that’s not the worst of it. Lily also discovers that there is a hidden world of magic and danger lurking in the shadows of the school, and that she might have a role to play in it.
Lily’s only friend is Scout, a rebellious and quirky girl who belongs to a group of teens with special abilities, called the Adepts. They use their powers to fight against the Reapers, corrupted magic users who drain the life force of others. Scout reveals to Lily that she has a rare and powerful talent, called Firespell, that allows her to manipulate fire. However, this also makes her a target for the Reapers, who want to use her for their own nefarious purposes.
Lily is thrown into a world of adventure, mystery, and romance, as she tries to survive the dangers of St. Sophia’s, learn more about her own potential, and help Scout and the other Adepts stop the Reapers from destroying the city. Along the way, she also meets some interesting characters, such as Jason, the handsome and mysterious leader of the Adepts, and Sebastian, the charming and charismatic son of a Reaper.
Firespell is a fast-paced and fun read, with a witty and relatable heroine, a captivating plot, and a dash of humor. The book has received mostly positive reviews from readers and critics, who praised the author’s writing style, the world-building, and the character development.
