The Mill is a 2023 sci-fi horror film starring Lil Rel Howery as Joe, a corporate worker who wakes up in a prison cell with a giant mill that he has to push for 16 hours a day. The film explores the themes of dehumanization, exploitation, and resistance in a dystopian setting where a powerful company controls the lives of its employees. The film is directed by Sean King O’Grady and written by Jeffrey David Thomas.
The film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. Some praised the film for its compelling premise, Howery’s performance, and its commentary on the evils of capitalism. Others criticized the film for its lack of subtlety, slow pace, and disappointing ending. The film has a rating of 2 stars out of 4 on RogerEbert.com⁶, 3.5 stars out of 5 on MovieWeb, and 2.5 stars out of 5 on Nightmarish Conjurings
My personal opinion is that the film is worth watching for its original concept and Howery’s acting, but it could have been more effective if it had more tension, suspense, and twists. The film felt too predictable and repetitive at times, and it did not offer much hope or resolution for the protagonist. I think the film could have benefited from more diversity in the cast, more backstory for the characters, and more exploration of the world outside the prison cell. I would give the film 3 stars out of 5.
