The Continentals is a 2023 TV mini-series that serves as a prequel to the John Wick film franchise. It follows the origin story of Winston Scott, the manager of the Continental hotel in New York, a safe haven for assassins. The series is set in the 1970s and explores the underworld of crime and violence that Winston has to navigate with his brother Frankie and their allies.
The continentals series has received mixed reviews from critics and fans. Some praised the production design, the period music, and the martial arts sequences, while others criticized the lack of Keanu Reeves, the overcomplicated plot, and the casting of Mel Gibson as the villainous Cormac.
My personal opinion is that The Continentals is an enjoyable but flawed series that could have been better if it focused more on expanding the lore of John Wick’s world and less on creating a convoluted family drama. I think fans of John Wick will find some aspects to like, such as the references to familiar characters and locations, but they might also feel disappointed by the absence of Reeves’ charisma and presence. I would recommend watching it if you are curious about Winston’s backstory, but don’t expect it to match the quality or excitement of John Wick’s adventures.
