Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms
The movie is set in ancient China, during the Shang dynasty, and follows the power struggle between the tyrannical King Zhou, who is aided by a fox demon, and the second sons of his rival dukes, who are loyal to the kingdom. A trio of gods from the celestial realm also intervene, bringing a sacred scroll that can turn mortals and monsters into gods.
The movie is praised for its stunning visual effects, sumptuous production design, and breathless action scenes. The reviewers also commend the performance of Kris Phillips as King Zhou, who shows emotional complexity and charisma in his role. The movie also features some racy scenes of forbidden passion between King Zhou and his queen, Su Daji.
The movie is criticized for its slow and confusing plot, which relies on the familiarity of the audience with the source material and the characters. The movie also suffers from some wooden acting and clichéd dialogue from the supporting cast. The movie is the first instalment in a planned trilogy, and leaves many questions unanswered.
