Born in Fire is the first book in the Death Gate Cycle, a fantasy series set in the world of Midkemia. The story follows Haplo, a half-human, half-dragon who is sent on a quest to find the three keys that will open the Death Gate, a portal between Midkemia and the other worlds of the Drahcian Empire. Haplo’s quest takes him to many different worlds, where he meets a variety of creatures, both good and evil. Along the way, Haplo must learn to control his dragonic powers, and he must also come to terms with his own identity.


In the end, Haplo succeeds in opening the Death Gate, but he also learns that there is more to his quest than just opening the portal.He must also find a way to stop the Drahcian Empire from conquering the other worlds.
The conclusion of “Born in Fire” sets up the rest of the Death Gate Cycle. Haplo has succeeded in opening the Death Gate, but he has also learned that the Drahcian Empire is a much greater threat than he originally thought.
