In the dystopian world of “Marked,” society is divided into two groups: those who are Marked, and those who are not. They are born with a strange symbol on their skin, which is said to indicate that they are destined for greatness. The Unmarked, on the other hand, are treated as second-class citizens.
Our protagonist, Cassia Reyes, is a young woman who is about to undergo the ceremony that will determine whether she is Marked or Unmarked. Cassia is determined to be Marked, believing that it is her only way to escape her life of poverty and oppression. However, on the day of the ceremony, Cassia receives an unexpected result: she is both, and Unmarked.
This means that Cassia is now caught between two worlds. She is no longer accepted by the Unmarked, but she is also not fully accepted. Cassia must now find her own way in a world that is both familiar and strange to her.
Along the way, Cassia meets a young man named Ky Markham, who is also both Marked and Unmarked. Together, they must find a way to survive in a world that is becoming increasingly dangerous. As they journey through the dystopian landscape, Cassia and Ky uncover a dark secret about, and the Unmarked. They must use this knowledge to save themselves and the rest of humanity.
