She has also written poetry and essays. First published in the 1960s, her work has often depicted futuristic or imaginary alternative worlds in politics, the natural environment, gender, religion, sexuality and ethnography.
The book can be seen as a metaphor for the nature of reality itself. Just as the archivist cannot know for sure what happened in the past, we cannot know for sure what is real in the present. All we can do is interpret the evidence that we have and make our own conclusions.
