The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a comedy science fiction series created by Douglas Adams. The story follows the adventures of Arthur Dent, a hapless Englishman, following the destruction of the Earth by the Vogons, a race of unpleasant and bureaucratic aliens. Arthur escapes Earth’s destruction with his friend Ford Prefect, who turns out to be an alien researcher for the titular Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a pan-galactic encyclopedia and travel guide for hitchhikers.
Together, Arthur and Ford travel through space and time, encountering a variety of strange and wonderful (and sometimes dangerous) beings. Along the way, they learn about the meaning of life, the universe, and everything (which turns out to be the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything).
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a witty and satirical take on science fiction, and it has been praised for its humor, imagination, and thought-provoking ideas. It has been adapted into a number of different forms, including a radio series, a television series, a stage play, a comic book, and a feature film.
Douglas Adams, who was born in 1952, attended Cambridge University. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything, So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish, and Mostly Harmless are among his five works in the Hitchhiker’s Trilogy. His previous books include Last Chance to See (co-written with Mark Carwardine), The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul, The Meaning of Liff and The Deeper Meaning of Liff (both with John Lloyd), and Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. His final work was the critically acclaimed collection The Salmon of Doubt, which was released in May 2002 after his passing.
